Selling Art

David Edwards, President, Heron Financial Group, New York, NY
"Our clients rely on us for all aspects of their financial lives.  We are thrilled to refer our clients to Annelien Bruins of Tang Art Advisory for sound advice about their art collections.  Recently one of our US based clients asked for help in the sale of an Old Master painting.  The provenance was sound, but the piece was unusual, without a ready market.  Annelien met with the client in her home, documented the art work, showed the piece to several auction houses and galleries to find the best venue for sale. Annelien also handled the paperwork, shipment, insurance, negotiations on sales estimates and reserves, and the payment process for my client.  Routine work for Annelien, but a once in life time experience for our client.  The painting successfully sold at Sotheby’s, and our client achieved a satisfactory financial result.  We, of course, had no doubt about the outcome under Annelien’s care.  We are delighted to provide references to any collector who would like to engage Tang Art Advisory’s services."

Selling Art

Private Client, Northampton, Massachusetts
Our CPA and estate planner recommended Annelien Bruins of Tang Art Advisory for the sale of the art in my mother-in-law’s estate. Annelien Bruins helped us to successfully sell three Giacometti sculptures, an oil on canvas by Simon Hantaï and a Picasso work at Sotheby’s in New York. We received favorable terms as a client of Tang Art Advisory and they managed the entire consignment process from having the works appraised, choosing the most appropriate sale venue, negotiating the transaction on our behalf, handling the paperwork, organizing shipment of the works to New York, reviewing the catalogue entries and overseeing the payment process. Annelien's attention to detail, follow-through, and consistent and complete communication with us throughout the entire complicated process was outstanding and valued at a difficult time. We would gladly and without reservation recommend Annelien to families or trust & estate professionals who need to sell groups of artworks out of an estate.

"In November 2014, I engaged Annelien Bruins of Tang Art Advisory to help me sell my Christopher Wool. The work successfully sold at auction in London at almost a record price. Prior to, during and after the sale Annelien communicated with me so that the entire consignment process was clear to me at all times. I received favorable terms from the auction house because we consigned through Tang Art Advisory. This combined with the above-estimate hammer price achieved means that I maximized my financial result. I would gladly recommend Annelien Bruins to international collectors who need to sell an artwork or entire art collection at auction."

"I am delighted to recommend the services of Tang Art Advisory and Annelien Bruins. Recently, I decided to sell a fifteenth-century panel painting, and, with Annelien’s expert supervision, what could have been a daunting process was instead a sensible and successful one. Annelien handled every aspect from initial inspection to the end result in the sale room. What I particularly appreciated was Annelien’s timely and consistent advice and communication.  I was apprised of every step and guided through a number of important decisions.  I greatly value the professional and personal attention I received, and I would not hesitate to engage Tang Art Advisory again."

Managing Art

Family Office, Worldwide
Annelien Bruins has managed the collections of our clients for nearly ten years. During this time she established a system of procedures and guidelines in which the art and antiques are monitored and safeguarded. She continues to work for us on a consultancy basis and advises us on art management issues such as valuations and insurance, tax-related matters such as purchase and sale as well as import and export. She manages international art-related projects for us and she directs our registrar. As a result of her dedication, professionalism and knowledge our clients’ collections are exceedingly well-managed in an incredibly discrete and cost-effective manner. According to one of the valuation teams that we worked with in 2006, the collections belonged to one of the best-managed that they had come across. I would happily recommend Ms Bruins to collectors, family offices and others who have to deal with the practical challenges that occur when dealing with extensive, international art collections.

Selling Art

Private Client, Sacramento, California
"My sister and I inherited two paintings that we found to be fairly valuable. Selling the paintings and navigating an area in which we had no familiarity became overwhelming. My daughter had a friend who highly recommended Annelien Bruins. Annelien assisted us every step of the way - from appraisal, to insurance, to shipping, to auction and lastly with the follow up and payment. She made what could have been a very stressful experience relatively smooth and still very exciting and novel. Her expertise and her connections were invaluable to us. She was easily contacted and readily available for any of our questions or concerns. She explains what is happening in language that the lay person can understand. We cannot speak highly enough of Annelien Bruins and the assistance given."

Private Client, Montreal, Quebec
Recently Annelien Bruins of Tang Art Advisory advised us on the sale of our 19th Century Barbedienne chandelier. She researched the piece and presented us with our options for sale, chose the most suitable auction house and consigned the chandelier on our behalf. Through Tang Art Advisory we received favorable seller’s terms from the auction house. The piece sold above its high estimate. Annelien kept us informed throughout the entire consignment process so that we knew exactly what was going on. We highly recommend Annelien and Tang Art Advisory to collectors and trust and estate professionals who need to deaccession works of fine and decorative art and who require independent, transparent and discreet advice.

Private Client, Southampton, New York
"Over the years I have come into the possession of a number of artworks and antiques, both through inheritance and acquisition. Recently I started to consider the potential sale of some of my collection and found out that these matters are highly complex, in terms of price discovery and determining the most appropriate sales channel, not to mention the potential tax consequences resulting from such transactions. Annelien Bruins guided me through the process in a highly professional, discrete manner and I would be more than happy to recommend her to collectors of art and antiques for the acquisition and sale of their art assets."

Managing Art for Fiduciaries

Evan Jehle, CPA/ PFS, Principal in the Family Office Group at Rothstein Kass, New York, New York
"Annelien Bruins of Tang Art Advisory gave an hour-long lecture to our team of CPA’s and family office advisors in New York, Boston and Beverly Hills. Ms Bruins discussed the nature of the international art market and art as an asset class; the pro’s and cons of art investment and the concept of art asset management, which relates to maintaining the value and condition of collections of fine and decorative arts. The purpose of the talk was two-fold. Firstly, our team members earned a CPE credit by correctly answering questions about the presentation. Secondly, Ms Bruins introduced important concepts in relation to authenticity, title, valuation and wealth transfer allowing our team members to gain a better understanding of potential problems that can occur when a collector owns, manages and sells art. The presentation was beneficial to our team members and we look forward to working with Tang Art Advisory in the future."

Managing Art

Private Client, London
"I recruited Annelien in April 2010 as a project manager to work on the development and initial implementation of a new inventory management system which we needed as a result of our rapid expansion. For this job I needed someone with experience of designing art-related databases because the system we required was complicated in that it needed to integrate data from a number of disciplines (sales, inventory management, finance, imaging). An added complication was the heritage data that needed to be transferred from our old records to the new system and the integration of the new system with our existing website. Annelien worked with me, our head of operations and our other team members to determine our requirements for the new system which she recorded in a mapping document. She communicated our requirements to our software developers and continued to liaise between us and the software developers until the beta version of the database was ready to be tested. I am pleased to say that our new inventory system functions very well which makes our lives much easier. I found Annelien to be highly professional in the management of this project and I and my team enjoyed working with her. I would happily recommend Annelien to any organization in need of a project manager to assist with developing and implementing IT systems."

Buying Art

Private Client, Easthampton, New York
"I recently engaged Annelien Bruins of Tang Art Advisory to assist me with buying the art for my Easthampton home. The brief was to include contemporary, local artists as well as a mix of emerging, mid-level and established artists. Annelien did a wonderful job working with my interior designer and as a result the house looks exactly like I envisioned it: a family home that has been passed on from generation to generation. Tang Art Advisory sourced the artworks, arranged shipping and installation and took care of all the paperwork. Annelien also negotiated favorable terms for me so that I essentially received her services for free, and more. She ensured I bought art of a quality that will go up in value in the future. I gladly recommend Annelien to new or established collectors who are looking to build a fine art collection in a smart way."

Buying Art

Private Client, New York, New York
"Navigating the art market is daunting. It seems so opaque and full of noise that one can easily make the wrong decision in buying art. At least that's how I felt when I first started as a collector. But I am so grateful that I've met Annelien, my trusted advisor. Her professional depth and breath in the art market have made investing in art a very pleasant and exciting journey for me. She helps me decide what to buy, how to buy, how to ask the right questions and research the artists and genre I like. I really appreciate her direct and genuine approach. I couldn't imagine doing it any better way."

I would have no hesitation in recommending her services to HNW or UHNW clients."

Art and Estate Planning

Private Client, Dover, New Hampshire
"Annelien Bruins facilitated the donation of a painting, on behalf of one of her clients, to our family. It was believed that this painting might have sentimental value to us, so Annelien was tasked with contacting our family and then managing the painting’s transfer. Even though we were technically not Annelien’s clients, she addressed various legal and logistical issues, clearly and promptly, and was even helpful in selecting a thank you gift for the painting’s generous donor. Annelien was always accommodating and responsive, and it was certainly a pleasure dealing with her."
